About us » A Family Firm

Frittmann wines from the Kunság district of Hungary are made as a family business. Apart from the two Frittmann brothers, almost every member of the family contributes on the vineyard, in the winery or in sales. Our parents and grandparents were also vineyard owners and vintners in what is Hungary's most extensive wine region. Their purpose has always been to make their wines from the best grapes of the best types the region can offer.

Quality and Faith

The Frittmann family has not departed from that tradition. We continue with the painstaking, venturesome tasks of grape-growing and winemaking learnt from our forefathers. The two youngest boys in the family are also studying, faithful to the family craft of quality-centred winemaking. The firm was placed on a new footing in 1987 and has operated as a limited company since 1998. At present, the family owns 40 hectares of self-planted cordon-grown vines. The quality grapes from another 70 hectares owned by smallholders are bought in under contract.

Types and Technologies

Our new processing and ageing cellars operate on modern, gentler technological principles. Controlled fermentation and cooling are used to produce wines that are characteristic of the region and meet the highest quality standards. When ready, the wines are bottled on modern plant in a building next to the cellars and earn the distinctive Frittmann label. The wine-tasting hall above the cellars can cater for groups of up to fifty
visitors, for wine presentations and tastings, as well as tours of the cellars and purchases of wine. We are glad to receive by appointment all visitors with an interest in our wines and those interested in buying them in small or larger quantities. We seek to meet the requirements of all customers, and for that reason, make quality, regional and table wines. We have recently made important technological developments and advances in producing and marketing quality wines. Our quality white and light, delicate, pale rosé wines are made exclusively with reduction technology. Our red wines are made with a mixture of traditional and modern technologies and fermented in accordance with present-day tastes in Hungary and abroad. The heavier quality reds with greater body are aged in wooden barrels. For some of them, small oak barriques are used. An exception is made with the native Kadarka grape, which came originally from Asia Minor. Kadarka reds are lighter in colour
and softer in flavour, though with a characteristically fiery, spicy taste. Kadarka, like the first-growth wines, does not require ageing in wood. It is much liked and well suited to the Hungarian cuisine. Our main white wine is Ezerjó, which in this region has an extremely fruity, vanilla bouquet and harmonious acids. This old-established Hungarian grape is the main type in this town. It hasrecently been gaining back respect among growers and popularity among consumers as a palatable wine for informal social occasions, also drunk in summer with soda water. Our Ezerjó received the Banner Wine award in 2003 from the Order of Hungarian Banner Wines.

Cserszegi Fűszeres is an increasingly popular grape abroad as well. It was developed in 1960 by Károly Bakonyi, who crossed Irsai Oliver and Red Traminer. The result is a fine wine with a spicy aroma reminiscent of Muscat. We make this extremely valuable wine in dry and semi-sweet forms. Other popular Frittmann wines are Rhine Riesling, Chardonnay and Muscat Ottonel. These have a different character from upland wines, drawn from the sandy, fertile soil and warmer climate of the plains. Kékfrankos Rosé can be made to an excellent quality with the new technology. Rosé wines used not to be fashionable and the techniques of making them were little known. This rosé retains the characteristic bouquet and spicy taste of the Kékfrankos grape, as well as having a white-wine freshness and a light sparkle. This rosé, designed primarily for summer consumption and served at 710° C is the perfect wine for an intimate tote-a-tote.
Our range of red wines, in order of harvesting, is Kékfrankos, Oportó, Kadarka, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Each carries features typical of the grape and the soil and may be influenced by the vintage as well.
